City Reservoir Historic Marker

"One thing that unites all gardeners as they contemplate the compost
heap is a belief in reincarnation, at least for plants."
-Geoffrey Charlesworth

The exposed rock wall formed part of an early Cheyenne reservoir constructed in the mid 1880s. Water came by wooden stave pipe across the USDA High Plains Horticulture Research Station, Warren Air Force Base and Frontier Park. From the reservoir it was piped to a steam powered pump station where one block south of Pershing and Central. The Reservoir had a wooden room from where patrons of early Frontier Days would watch rodeo activities. Around 1935 the roof had deteriorated and was removed. The reservoir was then filled with dirt for safety. By then, Cheyenne had other water reservoirs for municipal uses. For many years the site appeared to be an odd dirt mound. The Cheyenne Botanic Gardens exposed a corner of the reservoir as part of its landscape in 1989. The plaque was presented by Beta Sigma Phi Preceptor Alpha Chapter in 1990.

Our South Community Garden now sits on top of the reservoir site. You can still see the rock work that was a part of the reservoir.
